In 1982, when the first members of PBAV came together as a club, exotic birds were readily available. There were no restrictions on importation, and finches, canaries, budgies, and parrots came into the United States by the carload, boatload, and planeload. Many arrived legally, while others were smuggled across the borders, leading to many dying from disease, poor nutrition, and mishandling. Concerned about the state of avian research and the welfare of these birds, Alan Greer and other breeders established the Parrot Breeders Association of Virginia to promote education, responsible parrot breeding, conservation, and high breeding standards. Today, we are known as the Pet Bird Association of Virginia, reflecting our commitment to pet bird ownership. The world has changed, and we have all become more environmentally aware. In 1992, the Wild Bird Conservation Act was passed by the US Congress, making the importation of most exotic birds a thing of the past. Our club membership now includes pet bird owners, veterinarians, pet store owners, rehabilitators, shelter owners, and breeders. Yet, our goals remain steadfast: to support exceptional education, research, and conservation programs that impact not only our lives but also the lives and well-being of our feathered companions. Whether your best buddy is a single tiny finch or you surround yourself with giant macaws, we’re all in it together... for the birds.

The Pet Bird Association of Virginia offers programs designed to educate, support, and connect bird owners and enthusiasts throughout the Commonwealth. Our initiatives promote responsible pet bird ownership, foster community engagement, and enhance the welfare of avian species, including parrot breeding and other exotic birds.
